Engine Noises That Are Not Normal

Bring your vehicle to Sellers Automotive right away if the engine is making any of the noises listed below. As the title of this blog post states, these noises are not normal. In fact, some of the noises are an indication that the engine is getting damaged. Let’s talk more about this below.

Grumbling

When school starts, you hear grumbling in the backseat. On Mondays, you may grumble in the driver’s seat. If the engine is grumbling, growling, or grinding, it may be getting damaged while you are driving. A grumbling or grinding sound suggests that you do not have motor oil circulating through the engine.

Hissing

If your cat hisses, he or she is not comfortable. If your engine hisses, it has a vacuum leak. This can also make a suction sound. Another thing that will cause hissing sounds in the engine is an auto fluid leak. The fluid can also sizzle when it drips onto the various engine parts because they are extremely hot.

Knocking

Another sound that can indicate that your engine is getting damaged is knocking. This can be a sign that the rod bearings are worn and, as such, the pistons are damaging the cylinder walls. Your engine may also knock if there are multiple detonations happening in one or more of the cylinders.

Popping

When we say popping, we don’t necessarily mean popcorn. We mean tapping. Popping or tapping sounds mean that your exhaust system is leaking. The most common culprit of an exhaust system leak is a cracked exhaust manifold. The catalytic converter will also pop if it has a clog in it.

Rumbling

A muscle car’s engine rumbling is a very cool thing. Your engine rumbling when it normally doesn’t can mean that somebody stole your catalytic converter. The engine will also rumble if the muffler is damaged. It’s important to replace either part to keep the engine noise at a minimum.

Squealing

Finally, you have noticed lately that your engine squeals when you turn the steering wheel. The part that is squealing in the engine is the power steering pump. Or, perhaps, your engine squeals when you first turn it on. This means that we need to tighten the accessory belt or replace the pulley.
